Ishara Kids didn’t start in an office. It started in our living room.

I’m Alok, and this is my sister, Neha. Our lives changed when I was identified as profoundly deaf. Growing up, we saw how hard it is for a child, and for a family, when language comes late.

So we turned what we lived through into our work. Neha became an early childhood educator. I became a specialised Deaf educator. Ishara Kids brings the two together.

It’s the school we wish our family had. Our promise is simple: no deaf child should have to wait for language.

We’re a sister and brother, and our lives changed the day Alok was identified as profoundly deaf.

Growing up, we lived the hurdles first-hand: very little specialised early education, the heavy cost of therapy, and hardly any learning tools that worked without sound. We saw how hard it is for a child, and a family, when language comes late.

So we turned what we lived through into our work. Neha became an early childhood educator. Alok became a specialised Deaf educator. Ishara Kids brings the two together: a place where deaf children have language from the start, and where their families learn alongside them.

It’s the school we wish our family had. Our promise is simple: no deaf child should have to wait for language.

Meet the founders

Neha and Alok: the school they wish their family hadNeha Kumari and Alok Ranjan, brother and sister and co-founders of Ishara Kids, talk at a table covered in photos, books and notes.

Neha Kumari

Co-founder, Educator and Lead Safeguarding Officer

Neha is an early childhood educator. Growing up alongside her Deaf brother, she saw how a child’s world opens up when the whole family shares a language.

At Ishara Kids she leads early-years teaching and the parent programme. She is also our Lead Safeguarding Officer: the person any parent or staff member can go to with a concern about a child’s safety.

Alok Ranjan

Co-founder and Specialised Deaf Educator

Alok is profoundly deaf and a specialised Deaf educator. He knows from his own childhood why early access to language matters so much.

At Ishara Kids he leads ISL teaching and the design of our visual-first curriculum, and you’ll see him signing in our videos.

Why we exist

  • Most deaf children are born to hearing parents who don’t yet sign.
  • The first years of life are when language grows fastest.
  • Families need a programme that teaches the child and the family together, and support that doesn’t depend on sound.
A mother holds her daughter, who wears a hearing aid, on her lap and they sign to each other.
